With the 2035 ban on new petrol and diesel car sales approaching, home EV charging is becoming essential infrastructure for Cardiff homeowners. A dedicated home charger is faster, safer, and significantly cheaper per mile than public charging — and it adds measurable value to your property.
Why You Need a Dedicated Home Charger
Charging an EV from a standard 3-pin plug is technically possible but strongly discouraged. A standard socket delivers only 2.3kW — meaning a full charge takes 12–24 hours. More critically, domestic sockets are not designed for sustained high-current loads. Running a 10-amp draw continuously for 8+ hours risks overheating, melted plastic, and fire. A dedicated 7kW home charger reduces charge time to 4–6 hours and uses a properly rated circuit designed for the purpose.
Types of Home EV Charger
- 7kW untethered (Type 2 socket): Use your own cable. Works with any EV. Most flexible option.
- 7kW tethered (attached cable): Convenient — just plug in. Choose the connector type for your car.
- 22kW three-phase: Faster charging but requires a three-phase supply. Rare in domestic properties.
- Smart chargers: All new installations must be smart chargers under 2022 regulations. These allow scheduled charging, energy monitoring, and load management.
How Much Does Installation Cost in Cardiff?
- Standard installation (charger + dedicated circuit + mounting): £800 – £1,200
- Complex installation (longer cable run, sub-board upgrade): £1,200 – £1,800
- Charger unit only (varies by brand): £400 – £800
These prices include the charger unit, a dedicated 32A radial circuit from the consumer unit, all cabling, the mounting post or wall bracket, full testing, and certification. We are OZEV-approved installers and can assist with any available grant applications.
Installation Requirements
To install a home EV charger, you need off-street parking (a driveway, garage, or dedicated parking space), adequate electrical supply capacity (most Cardiff homes have sufficient capacity for a 7kW charger), and a suitable mounting location within reasonable cable distance of the consumer unit. If your property does not have adequate supply, we coordinate with the Distribution Network Operator for an upgrade.
