Why Period Properties Have Different Wiring Challenges
Solid Walls
Pre-1920s Cardiff properties were built predominantly with solid brick or stone walls. Unlike later cavity-wall construction, there is no void between two leaves of masonry for cables to pass through. Every cable route in a solid wall must be physically chased — a groove cut into the plaster and masonry for the cable to run in. This takes longer, generates more dust, and requires skilled finishing to be invisible after replastering.
Original Wiring Types
Properties that have not been fully rewired since the 1950s-1970s may contain VIR (Vulcanised India Rubber) cables, fabric-covered cables with a cotton outer sheath, lead-sheathed cables in the very oldest properties, and early PVC cables. All of these materials degrade with age — rubber becomes brittle, fabric deteriorates, lead sheathing corrodes. Any of these cable types found during an inspection is a clear indicator that full rewiring is required.
Period Features to Protect
Victorian and Edwardian homes have features that rewires must work around: decorative cornices and ceiling roses, original skirting boards and dado rails, feature fireplaces with tiled surrounds, parquet and original timber floors, and in some cases listed building restrictions that limit cable routing options.

Chases in solid walls are cut using a diamond-tipped wall chaser with dust extraction. Chases are cut to the minimum width and depth needed, then filled in two coats: a bonding coat, then a finish coat to bring the surface flush. Finished chases are invisible after skimming and decoration.
