5.0 from 40+ reviews · Half-day installation · NICEIC ApprovedHome EV Charging: What You Need to Know
Installing a dedicated EV charger at home is the most convenient and cost-effective way to charge your electric vehicle. A home wallbox charges significantly faster than a standard 3-pin plug — typically providing a full charge overnight — while using a dedicated circuit that is safely rated for the continuous high current draw that EV charging demands.
A professionally installed EV charger requires a dedicated 32A radial circuit from the consumer unit, appropriate cable sizing for the distance between the board and the charger, correct earthing arrangements verified for the specific charger model, and a suitable mounting location with adequate ventilation and weather protection. These requirements make EV charger installation a job for qualified electricians, not general handymen.
We install all major EV charger brands including Easee, Ohme, Zappi, Pod Point, and Wallbox. Each brand has specific installation requirements, and we are trained on the electrical specifications of all models we supply. We also install chargers purchased directly by homeowners — provided they meet current safety standards.
At Cardiff Electrical Home Rewire Ltd, every EV charger installation includes a thorough assessment of your existing electrical supply, a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, verification of earthing arrangements, full testing, and an Electrical Installation Certificate. We handle the entire process from survey to certification.

The Risks of Incorrect EV Charger Installation
EV charging draws high current continuously for extended periods — often 7kW for 6–8 hours. This places significant demands on your electrical installation, and shortcuts during installation create serious safety risks.
3-Pin Plug Overheating
Charging from a standard 13A domestic socket draws near-maximum current for hours. This causes overheating in sockets, plugs, and wiring — particularly in older installations — creating a sustained fire risk.
Undersized Cable
Using cable that is too small for the circuit length and load causes voltage drop, overheating, and potential cable failure. Correct derating calculations must account for cable length, installation method, and ambient temperature.
Earthing Deficiencies
Many EV chargers require a specific earthing arrangement (typically PME with earth electrode or TT). Installing a charger on an inadequate earthing system creates a shock risk, particularly in wet conditions.
Consumer Unit Overload
Adding a 32A EV circuit to an already fully loaded consumer unit can exceed the supply capacity. This causes nuisance tripping, overheating at the main switch, and potential damage to the incoming supply.
No Certification
An EV charger installation without proper certification is not compliant with Part P building regulations. This can void your home insurance, create problems during property sales, and invalidate the charger warranty.
Incorrect Charger Selection
Selecting a charger without considering your vehicle's onboard charger capacity, your electrical supply limitations, and your typical charging patterns results in either overspend or inadequate charging speed.

Why Choose Us
Benefits of Professional EV Charger Installation
Overnight Full Charge
A 7kW home charger provides a full charge overnight on off-peak electricity — typically costing £4–8 compared to £15–25 at public chargers.
Safe Continuous Draw
A dedicated 32A circuit is designed for the continuous high-current draw of EV charging — unlike domestic sockets which overheat under sustained load.
Smart Charging
Schedule charging for off-peak hours, set charge limits, and monitor energy usage through the charger's smartphone app.
Property Value Increase
A professionally installed EV charger is an increasingly valued feature for property buyers, particularly as EV adoption continues to accelerate.
Warranty Protection
Professional installation by an accredited installer is required to maintain the manufacturer's warranty on most EV chargers.
Full Certification
Every installation includes an Electrical Installation Certificate and Part P notification — essential for insurance, warranty, and property sales.
EV Charger Installation: Technical Details
Charger Types and Specifications
Home EV chargers are available in untethered (socket) and tethered (attached cable) configurations, with power ratings of 3.6kW (16A) or 7kW (32A) for single-phase supplies. We recommend 7kW tethered chargers for most residential installations — providing the fastest charging speed available on a standard UK single-phase supply with the convenience of an attached cable. Untethered chargers are suitable for households with multiple EVs using different connector types. Three-phase 22kW chargers are available for properties with three-phase supplies, though these are uncommon in residential settings.
Electrical Supply Assessment
Before any installation, we verify that your incoming electrical supply can accommodate the additional 32A EV circuit. A standard UK domestic supply provides 60A or 100A single-phase. We calculate the maximum demand including all existing circuits plus the proposed EV charger to confirm that the supply is adequate. Where the supply is close to capacity, we recommend chargers with dynamic load management (such as the Zappi or Ohme) which automatically adjust charging speed based on real-time household demand, preventing the main fuse from being overloaded.
Earthing Requirements
EV charger installations have specific earthing requirements that must be verified before installation. Most UK properties have a PME (Protective Multiple Earthing) supply, which requires additional protective measures for EV chargers — typically an earth electrode to provide a parallel earth path. This is because an EV connected to a charger creates a direct connection between the electrical installation and the general mass of earth through the vehicle's chassis. We install earth rods where required and test the combined earthing arrangement to confirm compliance with BS 7671 Section 722.
Cable Sizing and Installation
The cable between the consumer unit and charger must be correctly sized for the load, distance, and installation method. For a 7kW (32A) charger, we typically use 6mm² Twin & Earth for shorter runs (up to approximately 20 metres) and 10mm² for longer distances where voltage drop calculations require it. Cables are run through walls, ceilings, and lofts using concealed routes wherever possible. External sections are protected in UV-resistant conduit. We apply all relevant correction factors for thermal insulation, cable grouping, and ambient temperature to ensure the cable operates safely within its rated capacity.
Smart Features and Energy Management
Modern smart EV chargers offer features that significantly reduce charging costs and improve convenience. Scheduled charging allows you to automatically charge during off-peak tariff periods (typically midnight to 5am), potentially halving your charging costs. Solar integration (available on chargers like the Zappi) diverts excess solar PV generation to your car, providing virtually free charging. Energy monitoring through smartphone apps tracks your charging consumption and costs. We configure all smart features during installation and ensure your charger is connected to your home Wi-Fi network.
EV Charger Brands We Install
We install and are familiar with the electrical requirements of all major UK EV charger brands. Easee provides a compact, modular design with excellent smart features and dynamic load management. Ohme offers intelligent scheduling with automatic tariff optimisation. Zappi integrates with solar PV systems for free solar charging. Pod Point provides a straightforward, reliable unit with simple app control. Wallbox offers premium build quality with advanced features including bidirectional charging on newer models. We advise on the best charger for your specific vehicle, electrical supply, and usage requirements.
