Kitchen Electrical Cardiff

Complete Kitchen Electrical Solutions

Modern kitchens require significantly more electrical capacity than older designs. Induction hobs draw 7kW+, electric ovens need dedicated 32A circuits, fridge-freezers need separate radials to prevent nuisance tripping, and dishwashers, washing machines, and boiling water taps each need their own outlets. Add under-cabinet task lighting, LED plinth lighting, extractor hoods, and USB charging points, and a kitchen can easily need 8–12 dedicated circuits.

We work with kitchen fitters, builders, and homeowners throughout Cardiff to deliver electrical systems that support modern kitchen demands. Whether you're renovating an existing kitchen or fitting out a new extension, we design circuits with adequate capacity, correct cable sizing, proper RCD protection, and future expansion headroom.

Kitchen electrical work is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. As NICEIC Approved Contractors, we self-certify all work and notify building control on your behalf. You receive full certification including an Electrical Installation Certificate and Part P compliance certificate — essential for insurance, warranty, and property resale.

What Happens If You Delay Kitchen Electrical Cardiff?

Ignoring electrical issues is one of the most common — and dangerous — decisions property owners make. Here's what you risk by waiting.

Cooker Circuit Overload

Connecting a 7kW induction hob to an old 32A circuit without diversity calculation causes sustained overheating and fire risk.

Inadequate Ventilation

Extractor hoods need dedicated switched supplies with correct ratings. Poor extraction causes moisture damage, mould, and cooking fume buildup.

Water and Electricity Proximity

Sockets near sinks require correct positioning and RCD protection. Incorrect placement creates shock hazards in the wettest kitchen areas.

Fridge-Freezer Nuisance Tripping

Fridge-freezers on shared RCD circuits can trip the entire kitchen when compressors cycle. We install dedicated non-RCD radials where permitted.

Unregistered Work

DIY kitchen electrical work breaches Part P, invalidates insurance, and creates safety risks that may only surface during a property sale survey.

Missed Lighting

Kitchens with only a central ceiling light create dangerous shadows over work surfaces. Proper task lighting is essential for safe food preparation.

Technical Guide

Kitchen Electrical Cardiff — In-Depth Technical Guide for Cardiff Properties

Cooker and Hob Circuits

Electric cookers and induction hobs require dedicated circuits sized for maximum demand. A typical 7.4kW induction hob draws 32A and needs a 6mm² cable on a 32A MCB. Electric ovens typically need 4mm² cable on a 20A or 32A breaker depending on rating. We calculate diversity using BS 7671 methods — not all elements operate simultaneously, so the circuit can be sized below the sum of all ratings. However, induction hobs with boost functions often need full-rated circuits. Every cooker circuit includes a proper cooker control unit with neon indicator and double-pole isolator.

Kitchen Socket Requirements

BS 7671 recommends at least 6 double sockets in a modern kitchen, plus dedicated outlets for major appliances. We position sockets above worktops for small appliances, below worktops for dishwashers and washing machines, and inside cupboards for built-in appliances. USB combination outlets are popular for charging tablets used for recipes. All kitchen socket circuits require 30mA RCD protection. For fridge-freezers, we may recommend a dedicated non-RCD radial where permitted to prevent food spoilage from nuisance tripping.

Extractor Hood Electrics

Cooker hoods require a dedicated switched fused connection unit (FCU) rated at 3A or 5A depending on the model. Ducted hoods need only electrical supply; recirculating hoods may need additional power for carbon filter fans. We ensure correct isolation switches are accessible for maintenance and that hood circuits are properly fused. For high-power island hoods with remote motors, we run separate supply cables to the motor location with adequate derating for the longer cable run.
